Tool steels are used to make tools such as hammers, shears, knives, and drill bits. Different elements and heat treatments are used to give them the required resistance, hardness, and rigidity.

Some of the elements include:

  • O1: a general-purpose tool and die steel. It is heated and then quenched in oil to achieve the desired level of strength and hardening. There are also other variants in the O series, such as O2, O6, and O7.

  • W1: a high-carbon steel hardened by water quenching. It machines easily and is weldable. It is commonly used in metal cutting hand tools.

  • A2: a versatile air-hardened steel. It offers an attractive combination of strength, toughness, and price. It offers wear resistance between O1 and D2. There are also other variants in the A series, such as A3, A4, A10.

  • D2: an air-hardened, high carbon, high chromium steel. It offers high resistance to wear due to contact with other metals and abrasive materials. It is used in rolls, dies, punches, and knives.

  • H13: an alloy of chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium steel. It is commonly used in hot and cold tooling applications due to its high resistance to thermal fatigue, such as hot forging dies, and components that require high toughness and highly polishable surfaces. H13 can be quenched by air, gas, or oil. There is a lot of variety in the H series: H1-H59.

  • M2: the most commonly used high-speed steel. It combines tungsten, molybdenum and chromium to give it hardness and wear resistance at high temperatures. It is used to make bits, saws, and knives.

  • S5: an impact-resistant steel. Silicon and manganese are added to this alloy to increase its strength, toughness, and hardening. It is commonly used to make springs, dies, screwdrivers, ball bearings, and punches.
