Aluminum is the most consumed metal in the world after iron. It is lightweight, strong, shiny, rust-resistant, highly recyclable and machinable, and is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat. It can be combined with other elements such as copper, zinc, and manganese to form alloys. These can be divided into two main groups:
-
Forged Aluminum – Made by melting aluminum ingots and mixing other elements. It is sold in ingot, billet, or slab form.
-
Cast Aluminum – This is produced by pouring molten aluminum into a mould. There are three main casting processes: sand casting, mould casting, and die casting.
The International Alloy Designation System (IADS)
This system is used to classify different types of alloys. The designation for forged aluminum has 4 digits: XXXX. The designation for cast aluminum also consists of 4 digits but with a dot between the third and fourth digits: XXX.X.
The first number is the most important. It indicates the main alloying element. For more information on the ranking system, please refer to www.aluminum.org/teal-sheets.
Wrought Aluminum
The Series
-
The 1XXX series is virtually pure aluminum (at least 99%). The series provides a soft, ductile material that is an excellent conductor of electricity and resistant to rust.
-
The 2XXX series contains copper which improves strength and hardening but reduces corrosion resistance.
-
The 3XXX series contains manganese as the main alloy element. They are versatile alloys with good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
-
The 4XXX series contains silicon which increases fluidity and makes it suitable for casting processes such as those used to make engine blocks and pistons.
-
The 5XXX series contains magnesium as the main alloying element. This series has high mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance in the marine environment.
-
The 6XXX series contains magnesium and silicon. These alloys are characterized by their resistance to corrosion.
-
The 7XXX series contains zinc as the main alloying element. This series has the highest mechanical strength of all aluminum alloys.
Cast Aluminum
Similar to wrought aluminum, the first digit indicates the main alloying element.
1XX.X unalloyed
2XX.X is Copper (Cu)
3XX.X is Silicon (Si) plus Copper (Cu)
4XX.X is Silicon
5XX.X is Magnesium
6XX.X is unused
7XX.X is Zinc
8XX.X is Tin (Sn)
9XX.X is for other
-
Except for 1XX.X, the second and third digits does not have significance and are used to identify the alloy family. For the 1XX.X, these two digits indicate the % of aluminum above 99%, similar to the wrought alloys.
-
The final digit indicates the form: casting or ingot.
