Acrylic (Plexiglass ®)
Acrylic is a highly transparent thermoplastic polymer known under the trade name Plexiglas (registered trademark). Plexiglas is light and is not resistant to heat or solvents.The acrylic panel is simple to use because it is easy to cut.
Polycarbonate (Lexan ®)
Polycarbonate, known by the trade name Lexan, is a thermoplastic resin. It is often considered the technical thermoplastic par excellence, due to its high resistance to impact, acids and other chemicals, its low rigidity, and its transparency. It can be drilled without cracking and can be used in bulletproof windows or DVDs. Acrylic and polycarbonate tend to be stronger than glass and also lighter.
PVC
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a high-strength thermoplastic commonly used in pipes, cables, automotive parts, and packaging. Chlorine and additives present in PVC can be harmful to health and the environment. Depending on the application, there may be chlorine-free plastics, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene (PEX), which offer a less toxic alternative to PVC.
UHMWPE
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is an extremely hard thermoplastic. It is non-toxic, and resistant to acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. It has excellent toughness, is very resistant to abrasion, and has a low coefficient of friction.
Nylon
Nylon is a crystalline polymer with high resistance to abrasion, mold and chemicals. It is used in a wide number of applications, such as fabrics and fibers, and automotive parts.
Teflon ®
The polymer based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), known by the trade name Teflon, is flexible, easily malleable, and stable at high temperatures. It is used in pipes and tanks because it does not absorb water and is resistant to many chemicals. It is used by plumbers to ensure the tightness of connections and prevent leaks. It can also be used as a solid lubricant and for coating applications.
