Several chemical elements can be added to steel to obtain specific desired properties:

  • Manganese helps increase the hardness of alloy steel.

  • Chromium increases its resistance to corrosion.

  • Nickel provides good corrosion resistance, while improving mechanical strength.

  • Vanadium improves thermal and mechanical resistance.

Alloy steels are divided into 2 categories:

  • High Alloy Steels have at least one chemical element other than carbon whose content is greater than 5% wt. Examples of high alloy steels include stainless steel, tool steel, spring steel.

  • Low Alloy Steels – simply called alloy steels, are more economical than high alloy steel and are used in a wide range of applications such as metal structures, tanks, boats, heavy equipment and much more.

The Different Alloys

Each type of alloy (low alloy) steel is distinguished from the others by its chemical composition, which gives it distinct characteristics that determine its use:

  • 4130 and 4140 - Contain chromium and molybdenum and are widely used due to their high toughness, fatigue resistance, and machinability. The main distinction between the two lies in the carbon content of each (0.40% for 4140 vs 0.30% for 4130).

  • 4340 – Contains chromium, molybdenum and nickel, making it a harder, more durable, and more expensive alloy than alloys 4130 and 4140.

  • 52100 - Is a steel that is extra hard yet workable. It can be formed and forged. It is particularly used to manufacture bearings and vehicle parts.

  • 8620 (impacto) – Is a low-carbon alloy characterized by high external strength and internal ductility. This steel is subjected to a thermochemical process called carburizing which increases its hardness and surface resistance. 8620 is used to make gears and chains.

  • 9310 (super impacto) – Is also subjected to the carburizing process to improve its surface resistance. Its high internal toughness as well as its weldability and machinability make it an alloy commonly used in the manufacturing of aircraft and heavy vehicle parts.
