The chromium content in stainless steel reacts with oxygen to form a passive film of chromium oxide that makes it resistant to corrosion. This resistance, as well as its metallic lustre, makes stainless steel an excellent metal in many applications such as:

  • cooking utensils

  • household appliances

  • manufacturing of pharmaceutical and food products

300 Series

300 series steels contain primarily chromium (18%-30%), nickel (10%-14%), and may contain molybdenum (2%-3%). Nickel increases the ductibility of steel at low temperatures and prevents magnetism. Molybdenum also reacts with oxygen to form an additional protective layer of molybdenum oxide.

 

There are 2 main types of steel in the 300 series:

  • 304, which contains 18% chromium, and 8% to 10% nickel.

  • 316, which contains 18% chromium, 10% to 14% nickel, and 2 to 3% molybdenum.

​The letter L is added at the end of the name if the carbon content is less than 0.03%, i.e. 304L or 316L.

400 Series

The 400 series contains 11% chromium (Cr) and little or no nickel (Ni). This type of stainless steel has lower corrosion resistance than the 300 series. However, it has better abrasion resistance. Due to the absence of nickel, the 400 series is less expensive and has magnetic properties. This type of steel contains manganese (Mn), sulfur (S) and other elements in smaller quantities.
